The State Government may soon hive off inland water transport system into a separate department. Inland water system is currently under the State Surface Transport Department, according to Mr Haider Aziz Safwi, Minister of Co-operation and Inland Water Transport, West Bengal.
“The work distribution is under way and it will be notified shortly. The inland water system has been under the surface transport system for the last few years. We are proposing a new department for it and it will start functioning shortly,” he said, while talking to newspersons on the sidelines of an interactive session organised by the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce here on Tuesday.
On being asked about the plight of sick co-operative banks in the State, he said, “We recently met the senior officials of Reserve Bank of India and they have asked us to submit a plan for the revival of the sick co-operative banks in the State and we are working on it.”
There were close to 40 sick co-operative banks in the State. “These banks need to be revived in order to protect the interest of depositors,” he said.
