The Indian IT and IT-enabled service sector has matured greatly in recent years, opening up opportunities that are not limited to technology alone, said Mr Magesh Venkataramani, General Manager, CSC.

He was addressing students of the Vivekananda College at a BL Club event sponsored by Tata Photon+. Mr Venkataramani shared with the students his insights on the future of the IT /ITeS sector.

Domain knowledge

He pointed out that there was huge demand for people with domain knowledge.

The job market required people with knowledge in global business processes in specific domain areas, including banking, accounting, legal and asset management.

“Apart from learning the foreign languages, also try to understand country-specific business expertise such as tax structures and banking /insurance policies.

“This will help you understand and adapt to those countries' business models more easily when you enter the industry.”

He also spoke about KPO or knowledge process outsourcing and future trends in the industry.

Emerging domains

According to him, knowledge process outsourcing business entities provide typical domain-based processes, advanced analytical skills and business expertise rather than just process expertise.

To that extent, the KPO industry called for more skills than the BPO (business process outsourcing) industry.

While KPOs draw their strength from depth of knowledge, experience and judgment abilities, BPOs are more about size, volume and efficiency.

According to him, emerging domains in KPO include HR outsourcing, supply chain management, tax returns, education, intellectual property research, legal support, and financial services.

He encouraged the students to seek positions as consultants in the KPO industry.

Strategic consulting

Further, speaking about strategic consulting, he said this field of work could involve identifying the key business factors driving successful companies in an industry, formalising perspectives on new business models, and developing insights on the emerging marketplace.

He told the students to gather more information on corporate and marketing strategy, strategies for new ventures, mergers and acquisitions, strategic IT effectiveness and operating strategy.

work on real time projects

He urged students to form small groups and conceptualise and work on real-time projects that would enhance their knowledge.

He concluded by encouraging freshers to take on challenges by venturing into entrepreneurial roles and also to seek opportunities in small companies in order to learn, rather than wait for a break in a big company.
