Students need both functional (hard) and other life skills (soft) to enable them to achieve success in their education, career and life, said Mr K. Shankar, Management, Six Sigma and Business Law Consultant.
Delivering a lecture on “Life skills development for career enhancement and success”, organised by BL Club and sponsored by Syndicate Bank for the MBA students of Rajarajeshwari College of Engineering here, he said that life skills provide a student in-depth training and make him or her a better personality and provide them a level playing field to enable them compete with students from other reputed universities and institutions.
Mr Shankar said “know thyself is the key to success” and life skills development helps one to achieve self-realisation and chalk out their own plans and programmes that are independent of others. “It will also help them analyse their own strengths as well as weaknesses, besides assessing the opportunities,” he said.
Defining success, Mr Shankar said that it was the progressive realisation of a worthy goal and it is a never ending journey. “Worthy here refers to our value system. To achieve success, you need to possess vision, mission, dedication, and above all, you must be willing to work hard. Success is the manifestation of good luck and it needs inspiration, aspiration, perspiration as well as desperation,” he said.
He said three things contribute majorly to success — knowledge, skills and attitude. “Knowledge comes through education, experience, observation and so on. Knowledge empowers a person and provides him the strength to face any challenge in life. Skill is nothing but applied knowledge. If knowledge and skills are coupled with negative attitude, then it leads to nowhere. Attitude decides the altitude of a person,” Mr Shankar explained.
A person can and will become successful with or without formal education, if he possesses 5Cs that is character, commitment, conviction, courtesy and courage, he added.
