Logistics in the present context can be interpreted as a global integrated network of activities that produces a chain reaction, said the Deputy Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Mr G.V.L. Satya Kumar, here on Friday.

Delivering a talk on the importance of logistics at Gayatri Vidya Parishad PG College, he pointed out that the interface between logistic chains is the most crucial factor for any sector. The talk was organised by The Hindu Business Line Club in association with Tata Photon Plus.

To showcase the importance of logistics, the Deputy Chairman cited the example of the making of a simple steel chair.

He explained the inter-linking of sectors right from the mining of the iron ore, which is involved in making of the steel, to the transportation of the ore to the steel plant and to the chair manufacturer and the networking of the warehouses to the retailers' point.

Mr Satya Kumar, who is from the Indian Railway Service, also spoke about thefunctioning of the Railways.

He said, “The Indian Railways is a world within a world. It covers over 70,000 route kilometres and has over 10,000 passenger trains and about 12,000 freight trains at its disposal. And most importantly it is managed by a single management.”

He also gave an insight into the functioning of the Railways' various departments such as marketing and commercial, operations and finance. He touched upon various crucial issues such as cross subsidy of fares, the passenger/tonne per kilometre pricing factor, the functioning of the 70-odd control centres in the country and the asset utilisation by the Railways.

On the port sector, he said that India has 12 major or government ports and about 250 minor or private ports across its vast coastline. And the total capacity of the ports comes to about one billion tonnes of cargo a year.

Mr Satya Kumar pointed out that since government ports are facing stiff competition from the private ones, the government is encouraging more private-public partnership.

“Mechanisation and automation is the key to sustainability and profitability and we are moving in that direction,” he said.

The Director of GVP PG College, Ms Rajini, and the Regional General Manager of The Hindu , Mr T.V. Suresh, also spoke.
