India has to invest a lot more in research and development, and deployment of technology in the farm sector to increase the per capita availability of food to a reasonable level, said Ms Uma Lele, Development Economist and former Senior Advisor to World Bank.

She was here to present the Dr M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection – 2011 to Mr R. Seshasayee, Executive Vice-Chairman, Ashok Leyland. The award was initiated by Rotary Club of Madras East in association with CavinKare Pvt Ltd.

Pointing out that still a third of its population live below the poverty line in India, she said it is not quite clear how well aware are the politicians and decision makers in this country of the gravity of environmental issues. “A sustainable solution to address major issues such as groundwater exploitation is the need of the hour,” she added.

Conserve ecology

Earlier, receiving the award, Mr Seshasayee said every individual should do his or her bit to conserve ecology. “It's everybody's business. Realising the ownership of the problem is very fundamental to finding a solution to it,” he said.

Good ecology is good business, said Dr M.S. Swaminathan in his address. A clear roadmap for sustainable development is key to ensure considerable progress in environment protection.
