It is necessary to be positive and proactive to become successful in life, according to Mr P.J. Rai, General Manager (HR), Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) Ltd.

He was delivering a Business Line Club lecture on ‘Changing the mindset and managing change' at the SDM Postgraduate Centre for Management Studies and Research here on Thursday. Syndicate Bank had sponsored the lecture.

Highlighting the role of proactive attitude in a person's life, he said negative attitude will lead to losing opportunities in life. It is essential to become adaptive and acceptable to become successful.

Terming mindset as an impression that a person carries about something, he said the human mindset gets conditioned to a certain pattern based on surroundings and perceptions. Stating that there is nothing like right or wrong in human resource management, he said sometimes something may sound right. But it may not hold good for ever. In such a situation, he asked the students to give benefit of doubt and asked them not to come to a conclusion in a hurry. Such a move will give rich dividends in life, and this will help them become professionally successful.

Mr Rai said that conflict management is very important in today's life. It depends on how a person effectively handles a situation. It also depends on the experience of the person, and on the ability to convince, influence and persuade people.

The problem in life occurs because of the response to certain situations. It can be managed effectively if a person can manage his/her responses in an efficient manner. “Around 90 per cent of what happens in your life is in your hand,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr K. Devaraj, Principal of SDM College of Business Management and Director of SDM Postgraduate Centre for Management Studies and Research, said that human resource management cannot be concerned to one part of the organisation. Human resource management means a lot in today's competitive environment, he added.
