The Member of the Standing Committee on Labour and Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr P.R. Natarajan, has appealed to the Government to find a permanent solution to the pollution problem that is now crippling the dyeing and bleaching industry in this part of the country.
While highlighting the plight of the industry, Mr Natarajan has, in a communication to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, pointed out that the dyeing units were unable to set up CETPs and ensure zero effluent discharge into River Noyyal for want of central funds.
‘It is learnt that out of Rs 200 crore subsidy announced by the Centre for 2010-11, only Rs 100 crore has been released in September 2010. Meanwhile, the Madras High Court had ordered closure of all the 754 dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur for failing to set up CETP and ensure zero effluent discharge.
“The power supply to these units was snapped subsequently, bringing the operations to a halt. Garment manufacturers started sending fabric to Punjab, Gujarat and even Colombo for processing, causing hardship and money.
“Such a situation could result in industries moving out of this region, leaving thousands jobless,” he said and appealed that an early solution to resolve this problem is evolved by finding a permanent solution in a time-bound manner.
