Armed forces provide good career opportunity for young people in India, according Air Vice-Marshal (retd) K.R. Karnik, Director of the Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte.

He was delivering Business Line Club lecture for students of Postgraduate Department of Business Administration at P.A. College of Engineering at Nadupadavu near Mangalore. Syndicate Bank had sponsored the event.

He said that career in the Indian armed forces for bright young men and women is a life of challenge, honour, glory and dignity.

Lucrative too

Mr Karnik said that the career in armed forces is lucrative now, as a person at the entry level gets salary of more than Rs 30,000 a month.

But the person should have the urge to work in armed forces.

He said that there are two types of cadres – commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers cadres in the armed forces.

He also explained about the selection procedures for them.

Leadership qualities consisting of self-confidence, initiative, team spirit, mental alertness, honesty, courage, and spirit of sacrifice are essential to become a part of armed forces.

Mr Karnik said that women can also become officers in the armed forces, and now only Short Service Commission is given to them.

On inducting Sachin Tendulkar to Indian Air Force as Honorary Group Captain, he said this initiative will encourage young people to join armed forces.

Asking students to dream of a job in armed forces, he said they should work hard, study well, and get mentally and physically strong to become part of this.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr A. Abdul Rahiman, Director of Postgraduate Department of Business Administration of P.A. College of Engineering, said that the youths of today should not only focus on the corporate world.

They should also look at exploring career in armed forces and look at protecting the country.
