Planning for waste management is inevitable, according to Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, former President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Delivering the Business Line Club lecture on ‘Wealth from waste' at Nitte in Udupi district, he said the Indian economy is registering a high growth rate, as evinced by economists. It is now time to manage growth, he said, and managing it is not possible without managing consumption. In the absence of simultaneous management of growth and consumption, there are possibilities of generating waste.

The event was held for MBA students of Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management. It was sponsored by Syndicate Bank.

Mr Prabhu said that the experiences of people belonging to various sections of society indicate that people's own actions generate waste.

“Since waste generation has become common, there must be planning for creating wealth out of waste. Management of waste should be thought of as an important component of this planning,” he said.

Quoting an example of the proposal to divert river water in the State, he said if water recycling is done effectively, the shortage of water can be safely avoided in big cities and towns. It is unfortunate that without planning for recycling of waste water, there are proposals for diverting the course of the Nethravathi, he said.

He also gave other examples of waste management of paper, metals, plastics, vegetables and industrial products.

Quoting Prof Peter Drucker, Mr Prabhu said waste is an activity that does not produce result. He explained it by stating that result-oriented planning and management can be helpful in avoiding waste generation.

Prof K.R. Karnik, Director of the institute, presided over the gathering. Dr G.V. Joshi and Dr Sudhir Raj K., faculties at the institute, participated in the interactive discussions with students. Mr Ram Mohan Rao, Manager of Syndicate Bank, Nitte, explained about various schemes of the bank for students.
