Mineral production index for the month of July rose 1.3 per cent year-on-year, driven by the increase in production from coal, which has become the highest contributor to the index since July 2014. The data was released by the Ministry of Mines on Wednesday.
In value terms, total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country in July was ₹ 17,564 crore with coal’s contribution at ₹ 6,045 crore.
Crude oil was next at ₹ 5,696 crore, natural gas at ₹ 2,070 crore, iron ore ₹ 1,989 crore, limestone ₹ 498 crore and lignite at ₹ 425 crore. These minerals accounted for 95 per cent of the total value of mineral production.
In terms of volume, coal production was 423 lakh tonne, lignite 31 lakh tonne, iron ore 119 lakh tonne and bauxite 2,521 thousand tonne.
