Aiming to enhance bilateral trade with India, the Morocco Foreign Trade Minister, Mr Abdellatif Maazouz today sought supply of rice and wheat from India, which is sitting on huge stocks of the foodgrains.

India has banned exports of wheat and non—basmati rice.

However, the country has shipped small quantity of wheat and rice via diplomatic route.

“Our trade with India is not at same level. We want to push them because we believe we have lot of synergy between our economies,” said Mr Maazouz after meeting the Food Minister, Mr K V Thomas here.

Morocco can be useful platform for Indian farm products, besides textiles. “Yes, we have requested for rice and wheat supplies from India,” he said.

Mr Thomas said the policy decision on Morocco’s request will be first considered by the External Affairs Ministry.

The North Africa has not specified the quantity of wheat and rice it requires as of now. It has also not been decided whether to export foodgrains to Morocco on government—to— government basis or through private parties, he noted.

Mr Thomas said that there is scope for increased import of pulses and olive oil from Morocco.

Bilateral trade between the two nations has been growing in the past 10 years and had touched $1.19 billion in 2008—09.
