Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has introduced a new assessment and collection system from March 1, for its low tension consumers, to make payment of electricity bills convenient.
According to Mr L.V. Sundareswaramurthy, Superintending Engineer (in-charge), consumers need to keep the billing cards near the meters and the reading would be taken on any day and consumers could pay on any day.
The assessment period would continue to be bimonthly. However, the consumers are required to pay the consumption charges within 20 days of assessment, failing which the connection would be snapped or a penalty levied.
The change is aimed at reducing crowding at payment counters and improving the cash flow, he said. The new system is already in vogue at Chennai, Erode and Coimbatore.
The extension of the scheme to Madurai covers Madurai, Madurai Metro, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathpuram and Sivaganga.
