Diesel and petrol shortage became a huge problem for vehicle owners in Chennai as almost all pumps in the city went dry on Sunday. There was no supply in the last three days, say bunk owners.
A majority of the bunks ran out of stock on Saturday morning, leaving a few bunks with just enough stock to run for another day. Sunday being a “no-supply day” usually, there was hardly any bunk – be it IOC, Bharat Petroleum or Hindustan Petroleum - which either had petrol or diesel.
There were tens of cars and bikes queued up in front of some of the bunks. In the entire stretch of the city's arterial road, Anna Salai, there was only one bunk (near the airport) which had “a few litres of petrol.” It was swamped by vehicles at 6.30 in the evening. “We give maximum of two litres for cars and one litre for bikes. We may stay open for another half an hour,” said an employee of the bunk. The ‘manager' of the bunk did not have any clue whether the supply will resume tomorrow morning. While refinery officials Business Line spoke to yesterday told that supply was normal at their end, officials of oil marketing companies could not be reached for comment.
