The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, said on Saturday that a new sand mining policy would be announced within a week.

He said the sand quarrying policy will factor in some of the recent observations made by the Courts and also concerns of the affected people.

Addressing the annual meeting of the Builders' Association of India (BAI), the Chief Minister said that the Government was aware that the shortage of sand had affected the construction segment and also, nearly 50 lakh workers in the industry.

The builders' fraternity was playing a critical role in development and some of their concerns would be looked into by the Government. “We see builders as a partner in development,” he said, while assuring the builders and contractors that the Government has ensured that there is no backlog in payment of their dues. In fact, some time ago, the dues had gone up but now the Government is ensuring release of about Rs 1,000 crore each month, he said.

Mr Reddy assured the builders' body that the Government would consider their proposal for setting up a cement plant, provided they were open to supplying the commodity to the Government at cost and also making it a stakeholder in the project.

The association has planned a Rs 1,000-crore unit in Mahaboobnagar.
