The development and modernisation of Chennai international airport is scheduled for completion by December this year, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Vayalar Ravi, told Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
“The project for the development and modernisation of Chennai International Airport sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,808 crore has achieved 71.5 per cent physical progress and the project is scheduled for completion in December 2011,” the Minister told the Rajya Sabha.
The development and modernisation of Chennai airport was earlier scheduled to be finished by April a deadline which was later extended to July. The project cost of Rs 1,808 crore has been sanctioned by the Government and this cost is to be met through the internal resources of Airports Authority of India (AAI), Mr Ravi said.
In response to another question, the Minister said that the private airlines owe Airports Authority of India Rs 352 crore till January 31 this year. Kingfisher Airlines owes Rs 257.62 crore, Jet Airways (Rs 38.49 crore), SpiceJet (Rs 16.99 crore), JetLite (Rs 13.96 crore), IndiGo (Rs 13.29 crore), Go Airlines (Rs 6.77 crore) and Paramount (Rs 4.88 crore), the Minister said in a written statement.
