The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra Government to decide by March 21 whether it would consider issuing permit licences for manual sand dredging after the Government's auction of awarding contracts for mechanical dredging failed.
The State Government used to issue permit licences to ‘hatpadis' (fisher folks who manually dredge sand) until last year when it came out with a policy regularising sand excavation with a view to curb sand mafia.
The Government pleader, Mr Vijay Patil, told the court that according to the new policy, the Government will automatically issue permit licences after the failure of two auctions.
