The Commerce Ministry on Wednesday hinted that the popular Duty Entitlement Passbook (DEPB) scheme providing duty benefits to exporters may not be extended beyond June 30.
Though exporters have been pressing for continuation of the DEPB scheme for another five years citing uncertainties in global trade, the Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Mr Anup Pujari, said that as of now, the Government stated policy is that the DEPB scheme will remain in force only up to June 30, 2011.
He was speaking at an interaction here with exporters organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). FIEO has said that the small and medium exporters will be affected more if the DEPB scheme is discontinued.
Mr Pujari, however, said the Government is aware of the current situations like Middle East conflicts and the Japan crises, adding that these are being monitored constantly.
Mr Pujari said that any case referred to Policy Relaxation Committee in DGFT will now be cleared in 30 to 60 days time.
He said that all Deemed Export claims have been settled, adding that in case there is any pendency, it should be brought to his notice.
