The Tamil Nadu Government's initiative to revive Arasu Cable TV Corporation seems to have gathered momentum with over 37,000 cable operators from across the State having applied for connectivity.

Early this month, Arasu Cable invited applications from MSOs (multi system cable operators) and LCOs (local cable operators) in the State (except Chennai), and has received nearly 2,650 applications from MSOs and over 35,000 applications from LCOs, said Mr M. Jayaraman, Managing Director of Arasu Cable.

“The work is now going on in full swing,” he says. According to him, the company is in the final phase of erecting head-ends and control rooms in all districts barring Chennai. “Almost 90 per cent of the work is over. We should be able to flag off operations very soon,” he said. (Head-end is a master facility to downlink satellite signals and retransmit to cable operators). Besides, Arasu Cable has recruited 16 consultants to advise the company on technical support systems, Mr Jayaraman added.

Tamil Nadu has over 1.5 crore homes with TVs, and almost 70 per cent of them depend on the cable network, and currently, Mr Kalanithi Maran-owned Sumangali Cable Vision is a dominant player in the market.
