The German consulate plans to open a visa section in Bangalore soon, which would help reduce the high number of visa applications now processed at Chennai.

According to Mr Horst Lommatzsch, Director – Destinations Management, German National Tourist Board, Germany registered a 26.2 per cent growth in visitor arrivals from India in 2010, while during the January-May 2011 period there was an increase of 22.4 per cent in tourist arrivals from India.

In order to promote Germany as a preferred leisure destination for Indians, the German consulate will soon open a visa section in Bangalore that will also ease the visa application process and reduce the high number of visa applications now processed at Chennai.

“In addition to the metro cities in India, we are also looking at tier-II cities in the country,” said Mr Lommatzsch. Currently, Germany sees Indian arrivals from tier-II cities including Pune, Lucknow and towns in Punjab. The tourism board has also re-launched its Web site, and also plans to come out with a micro site specifically aimed at the Indian market which will be ready soon.

“We want to make theme-based promotions in India, with 2011 marked for health and fitness tourism, 2012 – incentive tourism and 2013 – youth travel,” said Mr Lommatzsch.
