In view of the weak financial condition of the West Bengal government, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation is taking a bank loan of Rs 400 crore to carry on with its ongoing projects, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said.
This was necessary so that the ongoing projects in the spheres of road maintenance, drainage and beautification were not stalled, Mr Chatterjee told the ‘monthly house' of the corporation.
The State's financial condition did not permit sanctioning this amount for KMC, he said.
Property tax dues
In reply to a question, Mr Chatterjee said property tax dues amounted to Rs 2,621.37 crore, including Rs 1,094.68 crore as interest and penalty of Rs 169.64 crore.
The number of assesses who were yet to pay their dues were 3.59 lakh. Altogether, 301 individuals owed over Rs 1 crore as property tax, he added.
The air-conditioned market on Shakespeare Sarani owed Rs 27 crore as tax to the municipal authorities. A notice was pasted on the market premises on Tuesday night, the Mayor said. A notice for attachment of the property would be sent to them in due course if they do not cough up that amount, KMC sources said.
Similarly, notice had been served on Roxy Cinema in central Kolkata, whose 99-year lease expired five to six years ago, the sources said.
