The Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, claimed that the State's financial position was sound and agricultural growth in the last three years had risen from 1.6 per cent to 6 per cent.

He was speaking at a press meet organised by the Press Club of Bangalore and Bangalore Reporters Guild to mark the completion of three years in office.

“The State was able to achieve good agricultural growth due to good timely rains, dams and reservoirs were full and the State Government offered farmers agricultural loans between one and four per cent,” he said.

He said for the next two years, key priority is rural development and creating infrastructure at district/taluk level to improve quality of living.

‘Kalyana Karnataka'

“In the next two years, I have a dream of ‘Kalyana Karnataka' (developed Karnataka) where rural areas will get their due and enough infrastructure development will be created,” he said.

“As for development activities needed to be taken up, the State Government will initiate road development works on a priority. We have set a target to repair 1.5 lakh km,” he added.

Law and order is in control, the State has not seen any major incidents of communal clashes. The Government in the last three years has taken steps fostering communal harmony.

“With law and order in control in the State, we were able to perform well in all major by-elections in the State and people have backed us by electing our party candidates,” said Mr Yeddyurappa.

Opposition parties

Mr Yeddyurappa said the Opposition parties – Congress and JD(S) – are not co-operating and are unnecessarily troubling the Government through undemocratic means.

“The State would have topped in implementing development works in the country. But the Opposition parties' attitude to the BJP government and their non-cooperative functioning is pulling it down,” explained Mr Yeddyurappa.

Reddy brothers

Talking about Bellary's Reddy brothers, the Chief Minister said it was his decision, which he took in consultation with the BJP's central leaders, to appoint the Reddy brothers as ministers. “It was my decision, after consultation with our central leaders,” he said.

The Tourism Minister, Mr G. Janardhana Reddy, and his elder brother and he Revenue Minister, Mr G. Karunakara Reddy, are accused of large-scale illegal iron ore mining, both in Karnataka and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
