Considering low Internet access to masses, the Karnataka Government will now use voice sites instead of Web sites to increase its reach and efficiency for employment and skill enhancement programmes in the State.
The Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation (KVTSDC), associated with the State's Department of Labour, today announced its partnership with IBM to develop a voice-based platform to increase effectiveness of employment and skill-enhancement programmes in the State, IBM said in a statement.
“This Smarter Employability Platform will help us expand our horizon and reach people in the remotest parts of Karnataka, enabling them to have an access to all the information through mobile phones, by using the local languages,” said Dr Vishnukanth Chatpalli, Executive Director of KVTSDC.
How it works
Voice sites can be operated by dialling a given number and to select services. An user can either type in numbers and speak commands.
The voice site developed by IBM will have to search the capability that will be able to identify the word spoken by the user and come up with the desired options.
As part of this project, IBM will create a voice site to connect job-seekers and job-providers along with training and certification agencies in the employment market.
This is a pilot project by the Karnataka Government and the services will be enabled in Kannada, Hindi and English.
In 2 districts
As the first phase of the proposed project, the Smarter Employability Platform will be implemented in the two districts of Mandya and Bijapur.
It will be expanded to eight more districts in the second phase.
Through this platform, job-seekers will be able to find available jobs and apply for the same and also refer opportunities to their friends. All this can be through mobile phones.
Similarly, job providers can post jobs, increase their reach, find matching candidates, connect with trainers and track the latest trends.
“By working with KVTSDC, we hope to benefit a large section of the society and help build a smarter nation,” said Mr Manish Gupta, Director, IBM Research - India, and Chief Technologist, IBM India and South Asia.
