The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, today ruled out the possibility of imposing President's rule in the State, due to the current agitation for a separate Statehood.

He felt that the current situation was like a passing cloud and is unlikely to last long, and appealed to the agitators to reason out and abstain from striking work.

Speaking to newspersons in the State Assembly at his chambers coinciding with the completion of 100 days as CM, he expressed confidence that everything, including the current unrest, would settle down amicably within six months.

“I think there is no need for imposition of President's rule in the State. The Parliament has to decide after discussions,” he said and expressed that there were many speed breakers in his path. Referring to the ongoing non-cooperation agitation by the Telangana Joint Action Committee, he said protestors should realise the situation and shun away from this as it is detrimental to the interests of the State. He felt that the agitation during the exam would cause a lot of problems to students taking exams and potentially impact their prospects.

Earlier in the day, a section of employees of the Secretariat staged a sit-in dharna outside the office of the Chief Minister, demanding payment of salaries, which has been affected due to non-cooperation by employees.

The non-cooperation agitation adversely impacted the collection of taxes and thereby on State revenues. The administration came to a standstill across nine districts in the State, including Hyderabad.

Mr Reddy expressed confidence that his Government would last till the end of the term in 2014 and his party would return to power.

On a day of repeated adjournments due to protests by a section of members of the House demanding separate State, the State Finance Minister, Mr Anam Ramnarayan Reddy, managed to reply to the Budget debate. The reply comes without a debate on the Budgetary provisions. All the six days allocated for debate on Budget could not go through due to repeated adjournments of the House.

He said the Government priority was maintaining a balance between welfare measures and development activities.
