The final polling percentage in the Assembly elections to Union Territory of Puducherry was pegged at 85.12 per cent.

Yanam region having a lone seat in the 30-strong Puducherry Assembly recorded the highest voter turnout of 94.53 per cent in the polls held yesterday, the District Election Officer, Mr G. Ragesh Chandra, told reporters here.

Next to Yanam, rural constituencies in Puducherry reported very heavy polling like Bahoor recorded 92.35 per cent polling while Oussudu and Mangalam segments recorded 91.12 per cent and 90.67 per cent polling respectively.

“This shows that rural voters enthusiastically exercised their democratic right and the turnout of the rural areas was greater than their urban counterparts,” he said.

Puducherry region having 23 segments recorded 85.52 per cent, Karaikal with five constituencies 82.76 per cent, Mahe (lone segment) 77.10 per cent and Yanam 94.53 per cent.

All the EVMs used in the polling have since been shifted to the respective counting centres where a three-tier security had been put in place. Counting of votes would take place on May 13.
