Expenditure Secretary, Ms Sushma Nath, has been appointed as Finance Secretary. She is the first ever woman Finance Secretary and succeeds Mr Ashok Chawla who retired on January 31.
Ms Nath, who was due to retire on March 31 this year, has also been given two-month extension till May by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet, according to an official release.
A 1974 Madhya Pradesh cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Ms Nath is currently the senior most official in the Finance Ministry. She had become expenditure secretary in the Finance Ministry in March 2008.
Meanwhile, Mr R Gopalan, who was recently appointed as Economic Affairs secretary, will also hold charge of Department of Financial Services for a period of three months with effect from February 1, 2011 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
