Key defence and nuclear establishments in Hyderabad have seen several top-level changes recently. New chief executives and directors to national facilities have been appointed.

Changes have been affected at DRDL, DLRL, RCI, BDL and NFC, to name the major facilities under the Union Ministry of Defence and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The city is home to the country's missile complex, with the Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) also being the main production agency.

At the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), the new director is Mr A.K. Chakrabarty. He succeeds Mr P. Venugopalan, who superannuated on March 31. DRDL is the key lab in the country's missile programme. Mr Chakrabarty has been leading an important submarine project of the DRDO.

Mr S.P. Dash has taken over as the Director of the Defence Electronics Research Laboratories (DLRL). Mr Dash also continues to hold additional charge as Director, Interim Test Range (ITR), Balasore.

In view of the crucial launch of Agni-V slated any day, Mr Dash, who has been heading the ITR which will monitor the missile launch, will hold charge till the test is completed.

The ITR is the key facility which will monitor, track and give feedback to the missile scientists. The launch facilities at Wheeler Island and Chandipur off the coast of Orissa are controlled by it.

The DRDO has appointed Mr M.V.S.K. Prasad as the new Director of ITR from May 1.

The Research Centre Imarat (RCI), which is involved in the development of Prithvi missile and key navigational and computational technologies for the missiles, also has a new chief in Dr S.K. Chaudhari. He succeeded Mr S.K. Ray in March this year.

At the defence public sector undertaking BDL, Mr Satya Narayana Mantha has been appointed the new Chairman and Managing Director from April 1. He succeeds Major Gen. (Retd) Ravi Khetrapal.

Mr Mantha has been Director (Technical) at BDL, which recently bagged a huge order to produce Akash (medium range, surface-to-air missile) from the Defence Ministry.

Among the DAE establishments, the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), the main provider of fuel for the country's nuclear power programme, has a new Chief Executive in Mr N. Saibaba. A distinguished scientist, Mr Saibaba took over from Mr R.N. Jayaraj on April first.
