The Tripura Government has decided to set up a bamboo park at Bodhjungnagar industrial park, 13 km from here, to ensure value-addition to raw bamboo which is abundantly available in the State.
Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services has been entrusted with the task of establishing the Rs 29.35-crore bamboo park, which would produce items such as bamboo flooring, laminated board, mat board, corrugated roofing sheet and incense stick, the Tripura Commerce and Industries Minister, Mr Jiten Chowdhury, said.
“From trade facilitation centre to bamboo splitting and slivering — all kinds of modern facilities will be available in the proposed park,” said an official of the Industries Department.
“Our main thrust would be to give a fillip to bamboo growers who are selling raw bamboos for cheap. Bamboo growers would benefit immensely if value addition is ensured to raw bamboo,” he pointed out.
Side by side, the Forest Department has also evolved a comprehensive plan to boost bamboo cultivation.
According the plan, altogether 26,107 hectares will be brought under the integrated bamboo cultivation in the next financial year (2011-12).
In the last two financial years over 10,000 hectares were covered with different kind of species of bamboo.
The Bamboo Engineering Research Centre at the Nanjing University has concluded after extensive research that the bamboo varieties found in the State could be used in making floor tiles, building materials and handicraft.
