The Special Representative for Global Intergovernmental Affairs, Ms Reta Jo Lewis, on Friday engaged with members of Indira Kranthi Patham at the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty here.

Ms Lewis was appointed Special Representative for Global Intergovernmental Affairs in January 2010. Her office is responsible for serving the global needs of US intergovernmental officials and the entities they represent.

Ms. Lewis works to build and enhance relationships between State and local officials in the US and their counterparts around the world. She also promotes effective local governance and local capacity building efforts.

objective

Speaking on the occasion, she said the objective of the present tour was “to listen and learn about how state and local institutions, governance and leaders in India would like to engage with their US counterparts. I am very excited about this state-to-state engagement, but I need (their) vision for linking together regional leaders.”

Earlier, Ms Lewis called on the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, at the Secretariat. During the interaction, she discussed the need to create official linkages between Governors in the United States to Chief Ministers, Mayors and administrative officials apart from linking them to institutions and private sector.

“US groups such as the National Governors Association and the National Foundation for Women Legislators and other local, city and state officials have expressed a high level of interest in engaging with counterparts throughout India,” she added.
