The Government has a performance deficit and proper systems need to be put in place to remove it, said Dr Prajapati Trivedi, Secretary, Performance Management, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India. He was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national conference on Millennium Development Goals organised by the Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE) and Indian Council of Social Science Research here on Thursday.
Because of systemic problems, civil servants were being transformed into “non-performing assets”, the official said.
Mr Rana Som, Chairman and Managing Director, National Mineral Development Corporation, said the company was taking measures to provide education and healthcare in areas of its operations.
Dr Md Zabid Haji Abdul Rashid, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia, said his country was working on eliminating poverty as part of the Goals.
“By 2015, we will totally eliminate absolute poverty in Malaysia,” he said.
Professor R.K. Mishra, Director, IPE, said the two-day conference would focus on South India.
Over 70 papers would be presented in the two-day meet, he added.
