The Coal Ministry has asked thermal power plants in close proximity to coal mines to transport the fuel by road or other means in a bid to free up rakes for long-distance transport.

“Plants within close proximity of mines (60 km) have been advised to enhance coal lifting through MGR (merry-go-round), road and RCR (road-cum-rail) modes, so that the rakes thus freed up will supply coal to distant plants,” an official statement said.

These steps are being taken due to higher generation and sudden growth in demand of coal from June 2017, the statement added.

For Central power generation companies, coal dispatch materialisation during September 2017 was 100 per cent. The materialisation at NTPC’s plants during September was 103 per cent, Damodar Valley Corporation was 98 per cent and NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd was 113 per cent.

According to the statement, for State electricity boards, the coal materialisation in September 2017 stood at 75 per cent. For independent power producers, the percentage materialisation in September 2017 was 75 per cent of the annual contracted quantity, with more than 100 per cent materialisation in the case of Nabha Power, Maithon Power, Sterlite Energy, Reliance Power, Lanco and CESC.

In October 2017, a total of 216 rakes were supplied per day, of which 206 rakes had gone to the power sector, read the statement.

It added that the coal supply matrix had also been decided for the power plants of Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Gujarat.
