Coal will remain the mainstay for India’s fuel mix even as the country tries to address climate concerns, Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday.
“We will look for technologies for clean coal as this will be the mainstay for India’s fuel mix,” said Goyal while addressing the India-Japan Energy Forum.
“Coal cannot be wished away. It is a reality. While we are setting ambitious targets for renewable energy, we are also looking at revamping our old plants with modern supercritical plants which bring in better efficiency,” he added.
Goyal also emphasised on increasing the cooperation between India and Japan for clean coal technology. “India can wash the coal and bring down the fly ash percentage and support the efforts of Japan to bring down the dependence on nuclear power,” he said.
