The West Bengal Government on Thursday said that excess rainfall in the Gangetic West Bengal and catchment areas of Damodar Valley in Jharkhand had created a flood-like situation in large parts of the State. Six people have so far died because of the situation.
Approximately nine out of 19 districts (that include Kolkata) are reportedly affected in the evolving situation, the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr Partha Chatterjee, told the State Legislative Assembly.
According to the Minister, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has released over 60,000 cusecs water. This, coupled with heavy rainfall has led to a flood-like situation in parts of Howrah and Hooghly.
Other districts that include Murshidabad, Birbhum, Burdwan, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Kolkata have been affected because of heavy rainfall.
“Relief work in the rain affected areas is being carried out by the State Government,” Mr Chatterjee said.
