As part of the strategy to strengthen cultural diplomacy with neighbouring nations, India is set to sign an agreement on audio-visual co-production with Bangladesh. This will be done during the upcoming visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over the weekend.

Officials said the agreement will set the stage for the two countries’ to jointly produce a documentary on the 1971 War of Liberation of Bangladesh.

This will be made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation war of Bangladesh in 2021 and also the centenary of Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 2020. The two countries will also jointly organise film festivals in India and Bangladesh.

The Information & Broadcasting Ministry will offer access to archival material available with the Films Division, Doordarshan and other media units to facilitate this co-production.

India has been on a signing spree for audio-visual co-productions with several countries in recent times that help producers to pool their creative, artistic, financial and marketing resources to co-produce films. The proposed co-production agreement with Bangladesh covers films, documentaries and animation films.

The Cabinet gave its nod to the proposed co-production agreement on Wednesday, that is aimed at providing an opportunity to showcase India’s soft power, will lead to exchange of art and culture between the two nations and promote India as a filming destination.

Another MoU will also be signed for “Cooperation in the field of Mass Media”, aimed at providing facilities for skill upgradation and training workshops for media personnel and facilitate exchange between journalists, civil servants, radio and television producer and performers.
