The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Anand Sharma, reiterated India's stand to not accept any decision over and above its agreement under TRIPS in WTO at a CII event here today.

Mr Sharma expressed concerns over the growing efforts of certain developed countries to enact Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement (ACTA) that goes beyond the provisions in TRIPS.

“We believe that certain provisions in this proposed Agreement are violative of TRIPS and we are firmly against such move, which falls outside the multilateral framework of WTO,” he said.

He also said that the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is expected to review the proposed bilateral trade and investment agreement between India and the EU at the meeting of the Trade and Economic Relations Committee (TERC) on May 29.

The talks are in the final stages, he said.

The TERC is expected to discuss the India-Australia FTA issue, recommended by a joint study group, and examine the setting up of a joint study group for a possible free trade pact between India and the Common Market For Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), said Mr Sharma.
