India will announce its ‘Intended Nationally Determined Contributions’ (INDCs) tomorrow (Friday). The voluntary emission reduction commitments made ahead of the climate conference at Paris in December will be disclosed at a press conference, as promised earlier, on the day of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.

India is the last big country to come out with its INDCs, which are what each country will commit to do towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its soil. These commitments (or INDCs) are likely to become binding on the country after the Conference of Parties-21, a climate negotiation conference held under the aegis of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

All other major countries including the US, China, EU and Japan have announced their contributions and as such, the world is waiting for India to come up with its commitments.

It is expected that several initiatives from India for moving towards low carbon economy will give it firepower at the CoP meeting. For instance, India has an ambitious renewable energy target of 175 GW by 2022, it has a carbon tax in the form of the Rs 200-a-tonne coal cess, the ‘perform, achieve, trade’ regime to encourage energy efficiency and a massive plan for greening the national highways by planting trees.
