The Joint Parliamentary Committee looking into the entire gamut of policy prescriptions in the telecom sector from 1998 to 2009 has decided to seek more time for submitting its report.
The committee will write to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking extension of its term up to the last date of Budget session next year, its Chairman, Mr P.C. Chacko, said here on Tuesday. The JPC was required to complete its investigations and submit report by the last date of the current monsoon session, which is to end on September 8.
“Given the volume of work involved, I had earlier indicated to you that one extension was unavoidable. We were earlier wanting to have it extended till winter session. But today the committee decided to seek extension up to the last day of Budget Session next year,” Mr Chacko told reporters here.
Indications are that Mr Chacko would in the ongoing Monsoon Session move the resolution for extending the committee's term to the last day of budget session next year.
The JPC will next meet on September 6, Mr Chacko said, adding that the Income-Tax Department would for the first time come before the committee and make presentation on the investigation reports on various telecom licencees.
