The Mangalore Regional Transport Office (RTO) has registered an 18.65 per cent growth in revenue collection in 2011-12.
Speaking at the ‘Meet the Press’ programme, organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Union here on Wednesday, Mr Mallikarjuna, Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Mangalore, said that Mangalore RTO collected Rs 112.01 crore revenue in 2011-12 against Rs 94.93 crore in 2010-11, registering a growth of 18.65 per cent.
He said that some of the high-end vehicle owners in Mangalore were registering their vehicles in Puducherry. In these cases, the vehicle owners had their residence and business in Mangalore.
Registration of these vehicles in Puducherry had denied tax due to Karnataka. The Mangalore RTO, which carried out a drive to collect tax from these vehicle owners, was able to collect nearly Rs 1.5 crore from them.
On the increase in the number of vehicles in the region, he said there has been around 75 per cent increase in the number of vehicles in Mangalore in the past five years.
The total number of vehicles registered under Mangalore RTO was around 3.6 lakh at the end of 2011-12, Mr Mallikarjuna said.
