Students of Manipal Institute of Technology will take part in SAE’s (Society of Automotive Engineers) off-road competition in the US.

All-terrain vehicle

Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor of Manipal University, launched Team Manipal Racing’s (TMR) all-terrain vehicle in Manipal on Monday. The team comprises 36 students of Manipal Institute of Technology.

The team will participate in the SAE’s off-road competition at Wisconsin in the US from June 7 to 10.

Knowledge, skills

Quoting Mr Siddharth Singh, team leader and third-year student studying in Mechanical Department, a press release said that the event will be a perfect platform to apply engineering knowledge and skills in a real world environment.

“We hope to do better this time with a lot of improvement in our all-terrain vehicle,” he said.

This is the third time that the institute students will be participating in SAE event.

Preparations for this year’s race began in 2010 after the team decided to skip the 2011 event at Illinois in the US.

That time was utilised to develop the design and come up with a better vehicle. The final design was completed by mid-2011 and the fabrication began in October, it said.

The release said that the vehicle has been extensively tested and found to be better in many ways than the previous ones. This year’s competition will see the participation of 115 teams from all over the world, it said.
