With many cities planning to have metro rail, the network in the country is is expected to cross 700 km in the years to come, said Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs.

Puri, who was speaking at the inaugural session of the Communities of Metros (COMET), said, “From a humble beginning of just 8 km in 2002, 425 km of metro lines are operational as of now in 10 different cities across the country. In the next few years, the network length is expected to cross 700 km”.

There is also a need to devise technologies to help in construction and operating metro systems in the sustainable manner, he added. COMET is a programme of international urban railway which provides confidential forum for metros to share experiences, compare performance and learn from other members of the organisations on improving the performance of metros.

Puri also said that within a year the network length of National Capital Region will cross 350 km placing Delhi among the first five cities having the largest metros in the world.

Last year, the Centre formulated the Metro Rail Policy to enable greater private participation, innovative financing and providing more options of financing by the government for creation of metro rail infrastructure.
