The Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by the Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, would take up to three months to finalise the Draft Coal Regulator Bill. The panel met for the first time on Wednesday.

“All ministries have given the views. We will bring amendments to the Bill. In the next 10-15 days, whenever the Home Minister has time, he will call for another meeting. At least there would be three to four more meetings,” the Coal Minister, Mr Sriprakash Jaiswal, told newspersons after the GoM meeting.

Allowing the regulator to decide on coal pricing was one of the contentious issues when the Draft Coal Regulator Bill was taken up by the Cabinet in May. The Cabinet had referred the matter to the GoM.

The Minister for Law & Justice, Mr Salman Khurshid, who is also part of the GoM said, “There is no opposition. We have just looked at each feature. Whatever needs to be done has been highlighted. They will come back with more home work.”
