Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s four-day visit to Malaysia and Singapore will focus on deepening trade and investment ties. Talks on containing terrorism will also be one of the highlights of the trip.

During the visit, from November 21-24, Modi will attend two significant conferences – Asean-India Summit and East Asia Summit – to be held in Kuala Lumpur.

The Asean-India Summit will be held on November 21. Asean is India’s fourth-largest trading partner and India is the sixth-largest trading partner for Asean.

“Yet, we want to further scale up our trade and economic ties. I will expand on the need for closer economic cooperation and investment opportunities in India at the Asean Business and Investment Summit,” Modi said in a Facebook post.

He said India and Asean are keen to have “better relations” in areas such as defence, security and cultural ties, adding that strong India-Asean ties will also further embolden the collective vision of an ‘Asian Century.’

On November 22, the Prime Minister is to attend the East Asia Summit where he plans to discuss security and counter-terrorism. “This Summit is being held at a critical juncture and together, we will discuss the pressing security issues. The looming threat of terror and the prevailing situation in West Asia will also be a part of the discussions,” he said.

Modi is also expected to hold a separate meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak on the sidelines. Besides, he will be also meeting leaders from Japan, China, New Zealand, Vietnam and Myanmar.

While in Malaysia, Modi will be visiting the Ramakrishna Mission and the Batu Caves Temple and inaugurating a statue of Swami Vivekananda.

On November 23, he will fly to Singapore where he is slated to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. He will also hold talks with President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

A business meeting with CEOs and industry leaders is also on cards. “A meeting with prominent investors will focus on the investment opportunities in India,” the Prime Minster said.
