The Tamil Nadu Government is aware of the discontent and militant attitude among the industrial labour force and will take corrective action, according to the Principal Secretary for Labour, Mr Mohan Pyare.
Militant activity in labour gives sleepless nights to all concerned . But whether in Manesar or disturbances in the industrial hubs in Tamil Nadu, such violence is an indication of conflict of interest with trade unions. There is a need to “introspect where there has been a failure in understanding the pulse of the labour,” he said.
There is a need for a more pro-active role by the Human Relations Department in industry, he said. He was addressing the annual general meeting of the Employers’ Federation of Southern India.
Another major area of concern is that the migrant labourforce lack awareness of local customs and face language barriers.
Mr Pyare, however, declined to elaborate on the corrective action that the Government is contemplating. The authorities are aware of the issues, he said to journalists who sought additional information on the Government’s stand in this regard.
Mr N. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions, said transparency in management, gaining the trust of the employees through clear processes and systems for career growth, is the responsibility of the employers. Cognizant recruits 30,000-35,000 people annually. It takes care to share company’s goals and objectives and the new recruits learn from their seniors.
A recent disturbing trend is the huge compensation that promoter-managers award themselves. It is not a healthy attitude when the compensation is disproportionate compared to their responsibility and qualification.
It is up to the board to ensure that a company gets the right chief executive, pay appropriate compensation and to set up a clear succession plan, he said.
