The Tamil Nadu Government will not notify the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Council Act 2009 and will consider repealing the law, said the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa in the Assembly today.
Intervening during the debate on the demand for grants to Agriculture Department, she said the Act passed in the Assembly in June 2009 was not notified and is not being implemented. The Government is also not for notifying the law for implementation. However, it will consult legal experts on the issue of repealing the law, she said.
It may be recalled that the agricultural council law was to “provide for the regulation of agricultural practice in the State of Tamil Nadu.” But there had been widespread concern among the farmers that it would prove adverse to traditional systems and informal flow of knowledge in agriculture.
