Polio eradication efforts are being intensified in West Bengal following detection of the country's first polio case in 2011 in Howrah district, an official release said.

The efforts aim to ensure that all children up to five years of age in identified high-risk areas are immunised during the forthcoming campaign. Nearly 84,000 vaccinators are expected to immunise 4.3 million children up to the age of five years during the week-long campaign from March 27.

In West Bengal, the Polio Partnership is led by the West Bengal Government with support from WHO National Polio Surveillance Project, Rotary International and UNICEF, the release added.
