Aiming to seek co-operation and expertise from the British industry, an Indian independent body representing the country’s power producers has launched its office here.

“It makes perfect sense for British industry and Indian security to come together and we are going to play a role of catalyst in the area of homeland security,” Mr Harry Dhaul, Director-General, Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI), said after the launch last evening.

“We are looking at technology, training and expertise from the British industry,” he said.

IPPAI, set up in 1994, is an independent body, which brings together all the important players, including government officials and multi-lateral agencies to discuss generic issues and resolve problems that may retard the progress and development of projects in the Indian energy sector.

IPPAI’s office at No 1 Queen Anne’s Gate will also serve as the European hub for Security Watch India, Indianeye Security and Global Energy Pvt Ltd, Mr Dhaul said.

The organisation already has its office in Washington and nine offices in India, he said.

It has set up an academy in Karnataka’s Belgaum where commandos are trained as Close Protection Officers, Mr Dhaul said, adding that the first batch of 36 officers have already passed out and 2nd batch of 40 officers have just completed their course.

“Homeland security is a great employment provider,” he said.

One of the foremost aims of Security Watch India, in the long run, is to achieve excellence in research with a team working on the Indian homeland security sector reforms and providing counsel for homeland security enterprises.

“SWI will provide customised advice to businesses to ensure their competitiveness and efficiency. It also serves as a link between such enterprises and the Indian homeland security stakeholders to communicate policy reforms and industry standards for security,” Mr Dhaul said.

The Director General said that the research team consists of experts from various fields like police, law enforcement, government, military, industry and young scholars.

The key objectives of SWI are to create security consciousness among all stakeholders, promote business opportunities in the Indian homeland security sector and provide homeland security enterprises with appropriate guidance,

It also aims to provide an unbiased platform for communication that cuts across hierarchy and dimensions of homeland security landscape in the world.
