Women from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar protested in front of Parliament on Tuesday, demanding guaranteed and universal right to food security. The protest was organised by the All India Democratic Women's Association.
Defying prohibitory orders, the women held a meeting and condemned the Government's proposed Food Security Bill and its plan to introduce direct cash transfer scheme instead of providing low-cost foodgrains, dividing the poor on the basis of a fraudulent poverty line and exclusion of handicapped, widows and other oppressed sections from the BPL list, an AIDWA release said.
