Nearly 48-hours before he is set to bid adieu to active politics to contest in the Presidential elections, the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, reiterated the Centre’s commitment to boost the economic sentiments.

On Saturday, Mr Mukherjee expressed his intention to step down from the Union Cabinet as well as the Congress Working Committee by June 26.

“I have spoken to the RBI Governor and the Finance Secretary. Certain corrective measures should be taken and the RBI is looking into it,” PTI quoted the Finance Minister telling reporters before leaving for Delhi, on Sunday evening.

Divine Intervention

The day, however, began on a different note.

Having returned from his ancestral home in Birbhum (250 km from Kolkata), on Saturday late evening; Mr Mukherjee visited Belur Math, the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission, on Sunday morning. He was accompanied by his son Mr Abhijit.

During his hour-long visit at Belur Math, Mr Mukherjee prayed at the old shrine, Sarada Devi Temple and the Swami Vivekananda temple before meeting the Mission President, Swami Atmasthanandaji Maharaj.

Day for shutter bugs

It was also another day for hundreds of regular visitors to Belur Math.

As an excited crowd cheered loudly, and the Presidential hopeful greeted them with a ‘Namaskar’ and waving his hands.

The moment was captured in hundreds of mobile cameras.

Divinity, however, went hand in hand with politics as Mr Mukherjee made a fresh appeal in favour of his candidature.

“I appeal to those political parties, which are yet to take a decision (about supporting the UPA candidate), to lend their support,” he told reporters earlier in the day.

Mr Mukherjee also had an hour-long meeting with the West Bengal Governor, Mr M.K. Narayanan, in the afternoon.
