Import of sensitive items, such as foodgrains, edible oil and vegetables, during April-December 2011 rose 44.7 per cent year-on-year to Rs 75,948 crore.

Imports of edible oil, automobiles, fruits and vegetables (including nuts), pulses, rubber, products of small-scale industries, cotton and silk, spices, alcoholic beverages, marble and granite as well as tea and coffee increased during the period.

However, imports of milk and milk products and foodgrains declined at broad group level.

Edible oil imports have increased to Rs 34,854.3 crore (Rs 20,791.5 crore). Imports of crude oil and refined oil went up by 68.1 per cent and 64.4 per cent respectively. The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of crude palm oil and its fractions, an official statement said.

Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Argentina, Germany, Korea, Ukraine, US, Canada, Myanmar, Japan, Thailand, UK, Cote D'Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Ghana, Benin and Vietnam have gone up while those from Brazil and Australia have gone down.

The gross import of all commodities during April-December 2011 was Rs 16,51,240 crore (Rs 12,28,075 crore).
