Veteran Communist leader and Senior advocate of the Kerala High Court Mr G Janardhana Kurup passed away at his residence here on Friday.
He was 92 and is survived by 5 daugthers. His wife had predeceased him, family sources said.
Mr Kurup a leading lawyer, had appeared in nearly 500 criminal cases, including in the case relating to communal riots in Marad in which he appeared for over 100 accused.
A famous orator, Mr Kurup, was founder members of KPAC (Kerala Peoples Arts Club). He had also essayed roles in the plays during the early days.
KPAC’s second and most popular play ‘Ningalenee Communistakkey’ (You made me a Communist), a socio political drama, had been directed by Mr Kurup along with Mr N Rajagopalan Nair. It propelled KPAC into the forefront of Kerala scene and played a historical role in popularising the Communist movement in Kerala during the 1950s eventually leading to the establishment of the first democratically elected Communist Ministry in Kerala in 1957 under E M S Namboodiripad. Till date, it has been staged in over 6000 stages.
His autobiography ‘Ente Jeevitham’, won him the Kerala sahitiya academy award.
The funeral will be held tomorrow.
