The West Bengal Tax on Entry of Goods into Local Areas Act, 2012 is a ‘retrograde’ step, says a Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT) report.
According to the report, the one per cent entry tax on goods entering or passing through the State is a conventional way to earn extra revenue and to stop tax avoidance.
“IFTRT is of the view that levying of entry tax in addition to existing taxes / duties by the State is not in conformity with the modern ways of levying taxes and duties because these type of efforts of entry tax may become another impediment in the seamless movement of goods within West Bengal and for the traffic passing through the critically located state,” the report points out.
